Department of Energy's (DOE's) Hanford site near Richland, Washington this sludge was generated during the neutralization of acidic raffinates from the production and purification of plutonium for defense purposes. The major application of the TRUEX process is likely to be removal of transuranic (TRU) elements from dissolved sludge waste at the U.S. The TRUEX (transuranic extraction) process is a solvent extraction process specifically developed to remove, separate, and concentrate actinide elements from nitric acid media. Test results using actual ICPP zirconium calcine reveal the necessity of preventing zirconium from following the TRUs. The results of the test using actual ICPP dissolved zirconium calcine, and subsequent GTM evaluation, show the feasibility of removing TRUs from the dissolved zirconium calcine with the TRUEX solvent and the deleterious effects zirconium poses with the ICPP zirconium calcine waste.
